Lizbeth is in trouble. Damaris knows she’s discovered his plot to overthrow his brother Alto, the current head of the vampire family, and take his place. To keep her quiet and eliminate the threat she poses he’s set her up and framed her for murder. Fleeing for her immortal life, she knows that every vampire blood-related to Alto is sacred and plotting against anyone has consequences. Luckily, someone in the shifter community decides to offer her shelter and to introduces her to someone who can help.

Kane, the half-demon, receives a message from a trusted source asking for help. His rescue mission goes up in flames when he realizes that not only is the damsel in distress a vampire but also his demon’s destined mate.

With a mounting amount of information and evidence coming their way, the paranormal community is on edge as the SIA and other factions work together to prevent a dark event that could change their world. Will they be able to stop it? Will Kane be able to protect his mate and have the life and happiness they deserve, or will the evil forces take over the community?

  1. Lizbeth

I’VE BEEN FRAMED—that fucker Damaris has somehow placed the blame for the murder of one of his brother’s bodyguards on me and I’m running for my life. I’m screwed and I know it. Alto is the head of our vampire faction and he won’t let what he sees as a personal attack against him go unpunished. But how can I fight my maker’s uncle and win against Damaris? I’m only a hundred years old and he is centuries old. Alto is going to believe his brother’s lies over anything I have to say. As I said, I’m screwed.

My best bet is to stay in the neutral zone between worlds but as a vampire I need to hide during the day. Some of the hotels within the neutral zone provide that option. Luckily for me, one of the vampire factions owns a bar and dance club, while a shifter owns one of the hotels. Since they are part of the neutral zone, any paranormal species can rent a room or be inside the area and be safe. They have a special room for vampires in need, and that includes providing them with blood to drink.

Bran, Alto’s son and Damaris’s nephew, made me a vampire a hundred years ago. He loves tall, curvy women and I was dying. I gained eternal life and a partner. At least that’s what I thought I’d received for eternity, but having him reject me is my trump card in a way.

Since Bran hasn’t drunk from me in more than fifty years, he can’t locate me unless we’re in close proximity to each other. Knowing Bran, I’m sure he’s trying to lure another human into becoming his latest partner—over time I learned he’s has a few different ones. I know when I first arrived after the transformation most of his previous partners wanted me dead. Bran only had eyes for me and when that faded, well, the bitches wanted to be my best friend. They wanted me to do to his new woman what they had done to me.

I didn’t agree or answer them, not wanting to jump into a partnership, which gave me plenty of time to study and learn about the manor, history, and how the paranormal world worked. That knowledge helped me. I became invisible over time, as without Bran’s protection I had a low status inside Alto’s vampire family.

I look out the window—the city of Montreal is beautiful at night. I’ve rented a room for two days. I’ve never lost parts of my human side and Bran never understood why I still had a bank account in the human world, but today having that account saved me.

I hear a knock, look through the peephole, and see it’s one of the hotel’s employees. He’s my contact and helped me to escape from Damaris. I open the door wide. “I wondered when you’d arrive.”

He’s brought some bottled blood, which he displays like he’s holding a wine bottle. “Yeah, I had some difficulties. Some members of your clan were here. Don’t worry though. We value secrecy and no one talked to them.”

I’m thirsty, and I pour the blood into a glass. It isn’t the best option, but for now, it will work. Human blood is excellent, but we need a lot more versus drinking another vampire’s blood. One thing I didn’t know at the time of my transformation is that it’s possible to sustain yourself from the blood of other species but only if they are the same species as your mate.

  “Bran was with them?”

The shifter liaison shakes his head. “No, he wasn’t. From what I understand, it was his uncle.”

  “That fucker. Damaris was here?”

“Yes, I think that was his name. He didn’t talk to me but to my boss. With the amount of money and gold you gave us, you don’t need to worry you’ll be betrayed.”

Yes, another thing I value is gold. It’s still a perfect way to trade security with other creatures. “Did he leave one of his goons at the hotel?”

“No, our security looked and didn’t see anyone.”

I sigh, maybe I’m free for now, but that also tells me I need to leave soon. “So your contact?”

He smiles at me. He’s gorgeous for a dog, well, he’s more of a werewolf. “He’ll be at the Dragon Blood club tonight, here’s a picture.” He hands it over, all shifters are tall, but I think the guy in the photo is taller than average. “Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Kane isn’t a shifter. He’s a half-demon. That’s why he’s so tall.”

I look at the picture and him again. “A half-demon? I’ve never met one. I didn’t realize there were any around here.”

“There are a few of them. Not many though. Kane works for the Supernatural Intelligence Agency, and he’s part of the Investigation Team. I told him your story and he was fascinated. Some of the other paranormal clans are noticing strange things happening in the community. He’s in charge of collecting information.”

  “Can he be trusted?”

He chuckles. “You don’t know much about half-demons, do you?”

  “No. Sorry for my lack
of education on the subject.”

He grins at me. “Knowing you as I do, I’m surprised. There’s one thing you need to know about half-demons. If they want to remain as half-demons, they have to stay on the right path. Until they find their mates at least.”

“Why do they have to stay on the right path and why are their mates so important?”

“Inside him, each side wants to control the other. Half-demons usually make perfect soldiers in the human world since they are smaller than full demons and look human until they need to release their beast, which is different from what we do. I’m guessing he was hidden by his human mother and raised without any influence from his demon father. He needs to find his mate to keep in control of his beast.”

That was interesting. “So, he’s luckier than others but he could still fail unless he finds his mate?”

“Look, I know you’re a hundred years old but he’s got a century on you. If anyone has an influence on our world, it’s him. He’s saved my life countless times in the past and brought me here where I found a pack again and gained some stability in my life.”

I look at him. “That’s why you’re helping me?”

“In a way. I’ve got my reasons, but I’ll tell you this much. I’ve also been framed in the past, and he was the one that brought down the bad guys and kept me alive in the process. So, yes, I believe in him, and he believes your story. One thing though, you can’t lie to him. Your aura changes when you lie, and he will know. You’ll understand when you meet him.”

  I nod at him.

“I’ll bring you clothes that are more suitable for a nightclub. Don’t thank me, you’ll be in good hands with Kane, but until then, stay here. That gives you two hours to prepare, and I’ll take you there. I can’t go inside as I'm banned from that place. You need to find the tallest man at the bar, that will be him.”

With that he leaves me to prepare, and I need to eat too. That way I won’t be tempted to find someone to satisfy my thirst.

  2. Kane

I CHOSE THIS CLUB BECAUSE I knew Alex was banned from it. I don’t want him to mingle with different species just yet—he needs the stability of the pack until he finds his mate. Not that I’m surprised Alex called me to help someone. What does surprise me is that it’s to help a vampire. Alex despises vampires, but when he told me her story, I was interested.

According to him, she was framed because she saw something that could interest the Investigation Team, which it does. Something is happening inside the paranormal community and the more information we get as to what is going on, the better.

I’m at my usual spot and it’s pretty easy to notice me with my height. The DJ inside the club is insane. I look around, several different species are mixing together and talking or doing other things. I’m in the neutral zone, which means it’s part of the government’s territory. Vampires tend to own clubs like this, since it’s more their lifestyle and they can access blood from humans and vampires from other clans.

One of Katy Perry’s songs is playing and the dance floor is crowded. The variety of species here tonight is huge. I can see a vampire, a werewolf, witches, faes, another shifter, another half-demon and also humans. Most of them don’t know about us, but some are well aware and want to be part of it. My phone buzzes and I pull it out to see a text from Alex.

  SHE’S INSIDE.

All my senses become alert and the need to find her is strong. I stand to make it easier for her to spot me. A faint smell of lavender hits my nose and I inhale deeply. Flowers have never attracted me, they remind me of a lot of things, but for the first time something sparks inside me. I spot her. She’s tall for a woman, but with lush curves that make me drool on the spot. She’s got dark blond hair—she’s gorgeous.

She belongs to us! I jolt, surprised. Since when does my beast talk to me in my head?

  “Are you Kane?”

I smile at her. I want to run my hand over her body to discover her curves. “I am, and you’re Lizbeth, the vampire in trouble.”

She looks around. I can tell she’s nervous as she takes a deep breath. “Yes, but don’t say things like that here. Goons are everywhere.”

I finished my drink and pay the bartender before taking her hand. I suspected something when I saw her, but now I’ve touched her I know. She’s my mate, my fated one. The beast wants out, to play and to claim. I need to control him, now isn’t the time. My dick is hard as stone. Fuck, I need to get us out of here and fast.

I hope Alex is waiting for us in his car near the back entrance like we discussed. I put my hand on her back to show her the way.

  “Where are we going?”

“We need to leave, staying here will attract too much attention and I suspect you don’t need that right now.”

She doesn’t fight and follows me. I keep a tight hold of her hand as a lot of people are in the club tonight, but before we reach the exit I hear my name being called.

  “Kane!”

Shit not now. Both of us turn. “Mel. What are you doing here?” I keep my mate close to me and put my arms around her waist to show Mel she belongs to me. I thought she would fight it, but she goes along with me, relaxing in my embrace.

“Kane, I didn’t think I’d ever see you with a bloodsucker.” Mel is a human, but she knows about the paranormal community and she loves it. I think she hopes to find a partner with one of us.

“Don’t start.” I bring my mate closer to me. She puts her hand on my chest. Fuck, now my brain is overloaded.

“Well, now you know he’s with me, so get lost,” Lizbeth says narrowing her eyes at Mel.

I smile inside, mates are possessive, and I know by their reputation vampires are the worst.

When Mel doesn’t leave my mate puts her hand under my t-shirt and claws my skin. Ah fuck, that’s a major turn-on. “Seriously, you need to leave. Now.”

Before I fully register her words, she grabs the back of my neck and claims my lips. It’s electric. My demon takes control of the kiss. It’s pure carnage to my senses. She doesn’t give me access inside her mouth but I push it, I badly need to taste her.

She finally grants me access, and I take the opportunity to completely possess her mouth. Her curves meld into my body, but I need more. I want to be inside her, my dick demands it, and so do I. I grab the back of her head which makes it impossible for her to move. I growl inside her mouth as she jumps and puts her legs around my waist.

I can smell her—she’s wet for me. I push her against the wall knowing everyone can see us, but I don’t fucking care. I want everyone to know she belongs to me. I look in her eyes. They are red and full of desire and something else I can’t put my finger on. Her fangs are showing and I know what she needs but if she does it right now, I’ll shred our clothing and claim her in front of everyone.

“What do you think about taking this somewhere else?”

She hisses at my request. “I need a taste. To claim.”

It seems she has issues controlling her instincts which is something she’ll learn in time.

“Hey! Take that somewhere else. You know the rules.”

I look over my shoulder as the bartender looks at me. “Yes, sir, I will. Don’t worry.”

He nods and continues to work.

I gently lower her to her feet. “We need to go, there’s a car waiting for us. I’m taking you back to my place until we can sort your situation out.”

She follows me without resistance, but I know she wants more and so do I.

  3. Lizbeth

AH, FUCK, WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Not only was I in a club where some of Alto’s family could be, but I’d jumped the half-demon that was supposed to be protecting me. I’m losing my mind.

“Don’t worry, everyone in the club has seen more than we showed them.”

“Great, so now I’m entertainment for you and the club?”

He stops in his tracks and grabs my jaw in his big hands. “You’re my mate, and you know that. You can’t deny it, and I don’t want to de
ny it either.”

I look at him. He’s good looking, with his tall, muscular frame, short brown hair, and yellow eyes. I need to control myself. Fuck, I want to jump him again. I need more. I need his blood.

“Alex is waiting for us. We’ll have more time to talk and get to know each other at my place. It’s bulletproof and nobody would dare enter my domain.” He pushes me outside the club, and I recognize Alex’s car.

Kane makes me hop in before sitting beside me in the back of the vehicle. “Alex, take us to my hideout. You know where it is.”

Alex looks at Kane like he’s lost his mind. “You’re sure?”

Kane passes his hand through his hair and sighs. “Yes, do it.”

Alex smiles and shakes his head but doesn’t say anything else. We head to an area I’m unfamiliar with and a couple of minutes later we arrive at a gate. Kane hops out and punches in a code. The gate opens, and he jumps back in the car before we head up the drive. Once the car stops again, I get out and wait while Kane talks to Alex. I’m pretty sure Alex is teasing him from the big grin on his face.

I try to control myself. I know deep down Kane is the one for me. I may have drunk before going to the club, but now my thirst is back. I should have until tomorrow after the sun is down before I need to drink again, but I know this need is something else. For now, I don’t have a choice but to wait and I wonder if he feels the same. I look around and see we are still in the neutral zone. “You live here?”

His eyes intense gaze at me. “Yes, but it’s also designed as a safe house. It’s totally secure. We’ll stay here for the time being. After that, we’ll see.”

Alex goes to the back of the car and grabs some luggage that isn’t mine. The only bag I have is my backpack.

“Lizbeth, here, we got you some stuff you may need and some blood for you to drink. Once it’s gone Kane will help you to find more blood.”
